DESCRIPTION
Camelina (Camelina sativa), also known as false flax or German sesame, is an annual plant of the Brassicaceae family, formerly Cruciferae, native to Northern Europe and Central Asia. Cultivated for nearly 4,000 years, it gradually fell into disuse during the 19th century. Today, there is renewed interest in the plant since its oil, which is very similar to flaxseed oil, was recognised as a foodstuff in 1998 by the French public authorities responsible for consumer affairs. It can be used externally on the skin or in massage, as well as internally in salads, where it adds a subtle flavour somewhere between asparagus and almonds. Never cook it, as this will cause it to lose all its beneficial properties.
Camelina oil
The seeds are grown without pesticides or fertilisers, carefully cleaned and then lightly roasted to give them a subtle hint of toasted hazelnut. The oil obtained in this way is used to enhance dishes.
For your information:
Oil obtained from unroasted seeds is also used for its moisturising and nourishing properties. This invigorating vegetable oil is widely used in Ayurvedic massages.
Add an exotic touch to your dishes with sesame oil: ideal for enhancing vegetable stir-fries, meat or fish marinades, and even for adding flavour to soups or tartares. Its intense, toasted flavour makes it a staple in Asian and creative cuisine.
